Stage 5 — After Approval
Military Service
Who is subject to compulsory service in the National Guard after naturalization
In Cyprus, there is compulsory military service in the National Guard (Εθνική Φρουρά) for male citizens. Service terms for naturalized citizens differ from the standard 14 months.
Official Rules
According to clarifications from the Ministry of Defence (read more in the department’s comments specifically for “Vestnik Kipra”):
- Under 26 years (at the time of obtaining citizenship) — service term is 6 months.
- From 26 to 45 years — service term is 3 months.
- After 45 years — not subject to conscription.
In Practice
Currently, there are no confirmed cases in the community of adult naturalized specialists (especially under the Fast Track program) being drafted and sent to serve in practice.
Nevertheless, by law, all male citizens of conscription age (up to 45 years) are required to regularize their status. Typically, a deferment or exemption is issued for this (e.g., due to family circumstances, health conditions, or other grounds). If you have military experience or army service in another country, this can also be taken into account.
